Abuelita Teresa, 2018

Mujer más fuerte que conozco / Strongest woman I know is a photo series based on the recovery of my grandmother who suffers from chronic kidney disease and has been going through dialysis and hospitalizations for the past 10 years. Before I left to New York for four days, I noticed my grandmother was not in her bed. I assumed she was with my aunt, but after I came back from my trip she was still not there. I asked my parents where she was and told me she was in the hospital the entire time. I was devastated and mad that no one told me that the most important woman in my life was hospitalized. Eventually, I called her and made sure everything was okay. A day after I came back home, she was discharged and came back with an oxygen tank to use while she sleeps. She was extremely weak, but quickly recovered. Mi abuelita is my second mother, if not first, who genuinely loves, cares, and supports like any other grandmother/mother figure would. When I first saw her missing, my brain refused to think the worst possible thing that might had happen to her and my heart refused to suffer by the thought and view of it.

I decided to document her recovering with a 4x5 large format camera. From the moment she came back until now. For someone who goes through dialysis and has a hard time breathing, she is still here to support, love, and care for me and my family as we are here for her, too.

Abuelita Tere is the strongest woman I know. She goes through dialysis almost single day, and yet she refuses to stay in bed locked in her room. Her illness does not stop her from stepping out of the house and facing the world. Because of her, she made me realize that there is nothing really that could stop anyone from doing anything. The world is in our hands, no matter what type of situation we are in.

It is an admirable thing to witness a woman who went through so much during her lifetime, and yet, still finds time to cook, rest, converse, go out, and love her family all at once. She is truly unbeatable.

Documenting my grandmother was a challenge for the both of us. I had to carry a large format studio camera around the house, and setting it up in my tiny house felt extremely overwhelming. I was crammed against the wall. It was a little frustrating for me to tell my grandmother to hold her pose for 20 minutes as I set up my camera, check the exposure, set the exposure, and prompt her accordingly to the environment and action. Although, I truly appreciate her patience because she did not complain once. Especially, when I was documenting her most vulnerable self. It meant a lot to me to be able to document her after experiencing a scare of potentially losing her. I know and I understand the stages of life and death, but I could not grasp the emotional and mental state of losing someone that I admire and cherish so much. I was not prepared for it. My grandmother in the other hand, she is absolutely fearless.
